Located on the doorstep of Kananaskis Country, UCalgary’s Biogeoscience Institute (BGI) has been a leader in field research since 1950. As the only research station for the Canadian Rockies and Foothills, BGI’s mission is to provide and support high quality science through independent research and research clusters.

The Biogeoscience Institute is world-renowned for research in animal ecology and wildlife; conservation biology; ecohydrology, meteorology, and watersheds; vegetation dynamics and forestry; ecosystem sustainability and environmental economics; human, domestic animal, and wildlife disease interactions. Our Community Outreach Programs connect science, research, and education with the public and cultivates relationships between naturalists and researchers, and over 75 years, we have built strong and lasting connections and partnerships with the peoples and communities of Treaty 7, the Town of Canmore, the City of Calgary, and beyond.

A Legacy of Scientific Exploration
The R.B. Miller Station was founded in 1950 by Biologist Richard Birnie Miller whose pioneering work on the survival of hatchery-raised trout in streams yielded both fundamental and applied value in the management of fish populations. Miller coined himself as "a biologist who has chosen the out-of-doors as his principal laboratory” a sentiment which resonates with many present-day field researchers of the stations. Operation of the R.B. Miller Station was fully transferred to UCalgary in 1991 and continues to support local and international researchers. A second station, Barrier Lake field station (formerly known as the Kananaskis Centre of Environmental Science) was built in 1967 and now provides a dedicated space for interdisciplinary research, science education, and a community learning space. With both field stations situated within the stunning natural landscapes of Kananaskis Country, under the umbrella of the Biogeoscience Institute, has attracted researchers from around the globe driven by the desire to unravel the mysteries of our environment.
